Physical Inventory.
- Not all inventory received is subsequently shipped to a customer. Inventory may be damaged, lost or used as samples by the sales department. For this reason, inventory must be counted to determine actual stock levels. The action of counting the items contained in inventory is usually referred to as a "physical count".
- Physical inventories- for legal reasons, for balance sheet purposes, or for internal controlling reasons are necessary.
- A physical count is an annual, periodic, cyclical, or emergency count of stock in the warehouse to verify records, to determine financial value or to help track down the cause of suspected problems. A full warehouse or full company physical inventory is often required by the auditors at fiscal year-end.
